1. See 1 Corinthians 7:7. By echoing the last words of the verse, Augustine is indicating that he means that some embraced continence and others, marriage.

2. “have cut themselves off”: a quite literal translation of se ipsos absciderunt, meaning that they have cut themselves off from typical married life. The Vulgate says, more frankly, “have castrated themselves,” which is not what Augustine has in mind here.

3. Simplicianus would succeed Ambrose as bishop of Milan after Ambrose died in 397.
